Here comes the main story, part 1 of chapter 1!
Annnd action!

“The kettle’s boiling,
Skye!”
“I’m getting it, I’m
getting it!”
Hurrying to the other
end of the kitchen, Skye let out a breath of relief as she checked the kettle.
“You shouldn’t have poured in so much water at once, Pat. This isn’t your first
time using this boiler.” Grumbling, she carefully placed the hot kettle down
onto a cloth pad, taking care not to knock over two bowls of dough.
“The tea’s running out
fast. I’d rather not risk Lord Ashworth’s temper.”
‘It’s faster to boil
water than wipe puddles off the burning stove.”
Pat blinked at her,
cheeky brown eyes peering out under a straight fringe. “I suppose.” Scratching
at her updo, she bustled off. Skye noted with amusement that the brown bob of
hair seemed to be barely held up. Today’s
an eventful day for the Ashworths, with several merchants knocking on the door
earlier and now a sudden visit from Camilla Flarisse, fiancée of Nathaniel –
Halting, Skye shook her
head. Master Nathaniel, she told
herself sternly. It wouldn’t be proper to not address him formally, now that he
is already of age. Any slipups and there will definitely be gossip among the
servants the next day. Something about having an affair with a lowly maid…
Shuddering, she bent
down to check the pie baking in the oven. Almost already. Now where’s the tea…
“How’s it going, Skye?”
She nearly banged her
head on the kitchen counter in surprise. Hardly any males, even the butlers,
ever walk into the kitchen, and the calm but youthful male voice made it
impossible to mistake the intruder for anyone else.
“What brings you here,
Master Nathaniel?”
“Drop the formality.”
Came the immediate response with a frown.
“Lord Ashworth will be
angry to hear that.”
“I’m the one being
addressed, not Father.”
